The Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) has praised the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Transport for laying the long-awaited Okada Legalization Bill before Parliament on December 10, 2025. The association described the move as a “major breakthrough” in the national conversation on the regulation of commercial motorcycle operations.
In a statement issued by its national leadership, ORAG expressed appreciation to the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and the Director of Transport for what it called a fulfilled campaign promise. The group noted that although the legalization process has taken time, it acknowledges that such reforms require careful planning and adherence to due process.
ORAG said the laying of the bill marks a significant step toward formalizing the operations of thousands of riders across the country whose contributions to transportation, especially in underserved communities, remain vital. The association emphasized that the regularization of okada operations will not only enhance rider safety but also provide economic stability for operators.
With Parliament expected to begin deliberations after the mandatory 21-day maturity period, ORAG urged members of the House on both sides to support the bill. According to the association, every constituency in Ghana has a substantial number of okada riders whose livelihoods would be positively impacted by the passage of the legislation.
The group reaffirmed its readiness to engage government stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the policy once approved. It also pledged its commitment to promoting responsible riding practices and improving road safety nationwide.
The statement was signed by ORAG’s National President, Michael Kofi Owusu; National PRO, Evans Waja; and National Secretary, Adande Kojo.
