GPS NABS ALLEGED JOURNALIST ATTACKER

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the public that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the reported assault of JoyNews journalist Mr. Latif Iddrisu.

As previously reported, on May 27, 2025, at about 7:00 p.m., a group of individuals, including some members of parliament and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), staged a demonstration in front of the EOCO Office in Accra. The protest was against the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi.

During the protest, Mr. Latif Iddrisu, who was covering the event for JoyNews, was confronted and assaulted by some demonstrators. Following investigations, on June 7, 2025, at about 5:00 p.m., the Regional Police Command arrested Theophilus Thompson, aged 55, at James Town in connection with the assault.

The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident.

The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that anyone who engages in acts of violence against media personnel or any member of the public is brought to justice.

BRIEF:

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case. In recent times, there has been a growing trend of politicians and their supporters targeting journalists in Ghana. This has created a hostile environment for media practitioners, making it challenging for them to perform their duties without fear of reprisal.

The Ghana Journalists Association has repeatedly expressed concerns about the increasing attacks on journalists and the lack of accountability for perpetrators. Journalists have been subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, and even threats of violence, often for simply doing their job.

Politicians, in particular, have been accused of using their influence and power to intimidate and silence journalists who report on issues that are critical of their actions. This has led to a chilling effect on free speech and press freedom in Ghana.

The targeting of journalists is not only a violation of their rights but also undermines the very fabric of democracy. A free and independent media is essential for holding those in power accountable and ensuring that the public is informed about important issues.

It is imperative that authorities take concrete steps to protect journalists and ensure that those who engage in violence against them are brought to justice. The Ghanaian media landscape deserves a safe and conducive environment for journalists to operate without fear of persecution or attack.
