NUTOG RAISES RED FLAG OVER HARASSMENT OF PRAGYA OPERATORS IN BOGOSO

The National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) has raised serious concerns over what it describes as the persistent harassment and unfair treatment of Pragya operators in Bogoso by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and some local authorities.

Kwao Arku, the National Public Relations Officer (P.R.O.) of the Association, in an interview with the Daily Times newspaper, alleged that the MCE has directed Pragya operators to use untarred roads, a situation he described as both unfair and frustrating.

He further indicated that the Assembly has imposed an annual tax of GH¢300.00 on each rider, yet continues to prevent them from operating within the main communities where their services are most needed.

Mr. Arku explained that such actions are not only burdensome but also undermine the efforts of operators who rely on the business for their daily survival.

According to him, the situation contradicts the approval by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the legalization of the Pragya business across the country.

He stressed that the Pragya sector has created significant employment opportunities for many young people and continues to serve as a reliable source of income for operators and their families.

Mr. Arku noted that Pragya services play a vital role in the local transport system, particularly in deprived and hard-to-reach areas where conventional transport services are limited.

He therefore called on the relevant authorities, including the Regional Coordinating Council and the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, to intervene and ensure fairness in the treatment of operators.

The Union warned that failure by the MCE to halt the alleged harassment and engage stakeholders in constructive dialogue could result in a nationwide demonstration by its members.

Meanwhile, attempts to reach the Bogoso MCE for a response were unsuccessful, but sources close to the Assembly indicate that measures are being taken to regulate transport activities in the area in the interest of public safety and order.
