POLITICS OF INSULT, SOCIAL MEDIA ABUSE WILL RUIN OUR FUTURE – IMAM CAUTIONS YOUTH & POLITICIANS

Bibiani – The rising culture of political insults and social media abuse among Ghanaian youth and politicians poses a serious threat to the nation’s future, Imam Sulemana Iddrisu Bamba, the First Deputy Chief Imam for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai in the Western North Region, has warned.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Times, Imam Bamba expressed deep concern over the reckless use of social media platforms to attack political opponents and engage in online bullying, noting that such behaviour erodes moral values and fosters division within communities.

“Our youth are the backbone of tomorrow, but if they continue to use words as weapons, they are setting themselves and the nation on a path of destruction,” Imam Bamba said.

He urged young Ghanaians to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to insults. “Before you post or share, think of the consequences. Social media should unite, not divide,” he added.

The Imam called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to mentor young people on ethical online behaviour. “Guidance starts at home and in schools. We must instill respect, truth, and tolerance in our youth,” he said.

He further stressed that everyone will face judgement for their actions and that it is essential to live a decent and moral lifestyle. “Our tongue is very powerful; we need to be mindful of our words,” he cautioned.

Imam Bamba also spoke on national unity, observing that Ghana is a country made up of both Christians and Muslims, yet internal conflicts persist. He condemned the practice of attacking individuals’ religion because of politics. “Attacking someone’s religion for political reasons is very bad, and we must refrain from such behaviour,” he said.

He added: “There is no need for Christians to banter Muslims, or Muslims to banter Christians because of politics. We are all one nation.” The Imam also quoted Jeremiah 6:16, urging citizens to follow the path of peace and righteousness.

On political issues, he described the growing “monecracy” in the country’s political landscape as a serious threat to future generations. He lamented that even within major political parties such as the NDC and NPP, members engage in abusive exchanges, questioning how they will unify to support their candidates after party primaries.

The Imam appealed to politicians to set the right example, stating that leaders must refrain from insulting opponents and spreading falsehoods online. “If those in leadership abuse their platforms, it sets a dangerous precedent for young people,” he warned.

Concluding the interview, Imam Bamba urged all Ghanaians to embrace civility in public discourse, both online and offline, stressing that national development depends on unity, mutual respect, and ethical behaviour. “Let us all work together—youth, parents, leaders, and religious figures—to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Ghana. Social media can be a tool for progress if used responsibly,” he said.
