Wassa Amenfi East District has welcomed a new District Cocoa Officer, Mr. Nelson Konkombo, who has promptly assured cocoa farmers of his commitment to transparency in his dealings with them.
The district, predominantly inhabited by farmers, relies heavily on cocoa production as a major source of income. Other key products include oil palm, rice, livestock, plantain, and cassava, with vegetable cultivation mainly done on a subsistence basis.
The new officer’s assurance comes at a crucial time, as cocoa farmers in the district face challenges, including the devastating impact of galamsey (illegal mining) on their farms and livelihoods. Galamsey has been known to destroy productive cocoa areas in the district, causing concern among farmers and local authorities alike.
In a Media Interview with Mr. Nelson Konkombo, These Were Some Key Areas the New District Cocoa Officer Highlighted:
Transparency in Dealings: The officer has promised to maintain transparency in his interactions with farmers, ensuring they are well-informed about agricultural policies, programs, and initiatives that affect them.
Support for Cocoa Farmers: The officer is expected to work closely with farmers to address challenges they face, including the impact of galamsey on their farms.
Collaboration with Local Organizations: The Wassa East Cocoa Cooperative, a local organization that works with cocoa farmers to improve their productivity and household incomes, could be a potential partner for the new officer.
The new District Cocoa Officer’s commitment to transparency is a welcome development for cocoa farmers in Wassa Amenfi East District.
Finally, Mr. Nelson Konkombo said his leadership will be crucial in addressing the challenges faced by farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the district.
