BOGOSO–PRESTEA COMMUNITIES SPLIT ON FUTURE OF HEATH GOLDFIELDS

Residents across key host communities within the Bogoso–Prestea mining enclave—including Prestea, Himan, Dumasi, Bondaye, and Nakaba—have expressed divided views regarding calls by the Catchment Area Community Alliance (CACA) to terminate the operating agreement of Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL).

While CACA has staged a demonstration in Accra, a significant number of residents have distanced themselves from this action, stating clearly that the protest does not represent the broader sentiment within the affected communities.

Many residents have urged the government—particularly the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, led by Hon. Armah Kofi Buah—to disregard calls for contract termination and instead facilitate constructive engagement among all stakeholders.

Preference for Dialogue Over Disruption

A growing segment of the community advocates for structured dialogue and mediation, emphasizing that collaboration among the government, community leaders, and HGL offers a more sustainable path forward than confrontation.

According to these residents, community mediation remains a globally accepted approach to managing mining-related concerns, helping to build trust while avoiding escalation that could undermine long-term development. Recognition of Progress and Call for Time

Residents supporting this position acknowledge that Heath Goldfields is in a rebuilding phase, following a prolonged shutdown of the mine. They point to early signs of progress, including: the acquisition and deployment of new mining fleet and equipment, ongoing efforts to restore operational capacity, and demonstrated commitment by management to engage local stakeholders.

They stressed that mining operations of this scale require significant capital mobilization and phased execution, and that the company should be given adequate time to stabilize and expand its operations sustainably.

“Our position is that Heath Goldfields should be given the time and support required to mobilize financially and operationally. The early commitment shown gives us confidence in the company’s long-term potential,” a resident noted.

Link Between Financial Strength and Community Impact

Residents further highlighted that a mining company’s financial capacity is directly tied to its ability to deliver meaningful outcomes, including: strong environmental and safety management, sustainable employment opportunities,

local procurement and enterprise development, and impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

They emphasized that a well-capitalized operator is better positioned to avoid short-term compromises that often lead to environmental, social, and operational challenges.

Confidence in Leadership and Engagement Approach

Some residents commended the leadership of HGL, particularly the Managing Director, for maintaining open communication channels and a respectful engagement style with host communities.

They noted that this approach has contributed to improved transparency and trust-building, even as the company continues to navigate operational challenges.

Constructive Expectations from the Community

While expressing support for HGL’s continued operations, residents also outlined clear expectations, including:

increased local employment and consideration of former workers,

strengthened community engagement through structured, regular dialogue platforms, responsible security practices that prioritize community relations, and enhanced delivery of CSR initiatives aligned with community needs.

Importantly, these expectations were framed as constructive inputs rather than grounds for terminating the company’s mandate.

A Call for Partnership and Patience

The prevailing view among this group of residents is that Heath Goldfields possesses a credible plan to redevelop the mine but requires time, stability, and stakeholder support to fully realize its potential.

They cautioned that abrupt disruption of the current operating framework could delay recovery efforts, discourage investment, and ultimately undermine the socio-economic benefits expected from the mine.

Conclusion

The situation within the Bogoso–Prestea enclave reflects a divided but evolving community landscape, where a substantial portion of residents favor engagement over escalation.

As such, there is a strong call for the government to act as a neutral facilitator, enabling alignment between the company and its host communities, while allowing Heath Goldfields the necessary time to build a financially robust, socially responsible, and sustainable mining operation.
