The Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum, through his office, has announced a two-day region-wide clean-up exercise aimed at improving environmental sanitation and promoting healthier communities across all nine districts of the region.
The exercise, which will be undertaken in collaboration with all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), forms part of the government’s renewed campaign to rid communities of filth and improve public health.
A statement signed by Mr. Joseph Turkson, Aide to the Regional Minister, said the initiative aligns with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to promote environmental cleanliness, reduce sanitation-related diseases, and protect lives and property from flooding.
According to the statement, the clean-up exercise will be conducted simultaneously in all nine districts, with residents expected to clear choked drains, sweep streets, clean markets, lorry parks, schools, health facilities, and other public places.
The Office of the Regional Minister noted that poor sanitation continues to threaten the health and well-being of residents, stressing that indiscriminate waste disposal and clogged drains remain major causes of disease outbreaks and flooding during the rainy season.
It therefore appealed to chiefs, assembly members, unit committee members, religious organisations, youth groups, market women, transport unions, educational institutions, and other community-based organisations to actively participate in the exercise.
The statement emphasised that sanitation is a shared responsibility and urged every resident to devote time and effort to ensuring that their homes, workplaces, and surrounding environments remain clean.
It further expressed confidence that the collective efforts of citizens, local assemblies, and government institutions would significantly improve environmental cleanliness and help create healthier communities throughout the region.
The Office also encouraged district authorities to effectively coordinate activities within their respective jurisdictions to ensure the success of the exercise and sustain the gains made after the clean-up.
The statement concluded by urging all residents of the Western North Region to fully support the initiative, stressing that a cleaner environment is essential for good health, sustainable development, and the overall socio-economic progress of the region.
