PROPHET ADOM KYEI SEEKS MAHAMA’S ASSENT TO ANTI-WITCHCRAFT BILL● SAYS IT WILL CURB ABUSES

Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, Founder and Leader of the Believers Worship Centre, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to support efforts to enact legislation against witchcraft accusations and related abuses in Ghana.

The call comes amid renewed efforts to pass the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill, which seeks to criminalise witchcraft accusations and provide protection for persons subjected to abuse because of such allegations.

The bill was first passed by Parliament in July 2023 but was not assented to by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who raised constitutional and financial concerns regarding the legislation.

Following the dissolution of the Eighth Parliament, the legislation was reintroduced in the Ninth Parliament in March 2025 by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, with the backing of other MPs.

Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah has previously spoken about the issue, calling for a national discussion on the meaning and application of the term “witch” and urging Parliament to address the matter.

His latest appeal adds to calls from civil society and human rights organisations for stronger legal protection for people accused of witchcraft, particularly vulnerable women and other persons who may face violence or discrimination.5

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has also called for urgent legislative action to address witchcraft accusations and protect affected persons.

In May 2026, Amnesty International Ghana similarly urged the government to prioritise the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, saying its passage and implementation could help protect vulnerable groups from violence and other abuses linked to witchcraft accusations.

The legislation seeks, among other things, to prohibit the declaration, accusation, naming or labelling of another person as a witch, as well as practices associated with witch doctors and witch-finders.

As of June 2026, however, the bill was still under consideration, with the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, telling Parliament that government was considering the legislation.

Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah’s appeal therefore comes as stakeholders continue to push for the bill to complete the parliamentary process and, if passed, receive presidential assent, with the broader objective of curbing abuses arising from witchcraft accusations.
