Amenfi East Miners Protest Organized Labour Status, Unlawfully Lock Up Assembly, Blocking Staff From Work

Amenfi East, Ghana – In a dramatic turn of events, miners in Amenfi East today have staged a protest as part of organized labour status, unlawfully locking up the Municipal assembly and blocking staff from working.

Small-scale miners, who were protesters, illegally disrupted the assembly this morning, preventing the staff from working.

The assembly’s activities have come to a complete stop due to the development.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Frederick Korankye has condemned the unlawful lock-up and disruption of work.

“We understand the miners’ concerns, but locking up the assembly must be condemned. In no uncertain terms should you block a whole municipal assembly from working because of demonstration. We urge them to engage in constructive dialogue. We’re not against organized labour, but the protestors must be lawful. The lock-up is unfortunate.

Hon. Frederick Korankye reiterated the Npp government’s commitment to fighting against illegal mining activities. Adding his outfit will do all things possible to ensure mines are done lawfully in the area without causing harm to river bodies and properties.

“The Npp government is committed to fighting illegal mining activities. We will ensure miners do not go contrary to the laws of the country. I will urge the demonstrators to exercise more patience since we are putting measures to ensure sustainable mining.” He concluded.
