BAWKU PEACE REPORT: IMAM HAILS OTUMFUO, WARNS MEDIA AGAINST SENSATIONALISM

The First Deputy Chief Imam for the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality has commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his role in the recent settlement of the Bawku conflict. He also cautioned the media against sensationalism in reporting the peace process.

Speaking at a gathering in Bibiani yesterday, the Deputy Chief Imam described Otumfuo’s intervention as timely and in line with the moral teachings of both Islam and Christianity. “Peace is priceless, and those who work to restore it deserve our praise,” he said.

He quoted Matthew 6:9 to underscore his point, highlighting the importance of praying for guidance and reconciliation. “As it is written, we must seek the path of peace and forgiveness. Otumfuo has exemplified this through his wise mediation,” the Imam added.

The Deputy Chief Imam explained that, within Islamic teachings, it is sometimes permissible to tell a harmless lie if it leads to reconciliation between conflicting parties. He noted, “Islamically, one can lie to bring peace among two conflicting parties if it prevents greater harm and preserves harmony.”

He emphasized that the Asantehene’s approach reflected this principle, prioritizing the well-being of communities over pride or personal gain. “Otumfuo chose the path that leads to unity rather than division, demonstrating true leadership,” he said.

On the issue of bravery and conflict, the Deputy Chief Imam stressed that being “manly” does not mean creating chaos or confrontation. He argued that surrendering one’s ego for the sake of peace is a greater act of courage. “It is accurate to give up for peace than to be manly enough to create chaos,” he said.

The Imam also called on the media to play a responsible role in reporting the Bawku peace process. He urged journalists to avoid sensational headlines and to present the facts accurately, warning that irresponsible reporting could undermine efforts at reconciliation.

He added that the media has a duty to support peace initiatives rather than inflame tensions. “Words are powerful. The way we report events can either heal or harm. Let us all choose to promote peace,” he stated.

The Deputy Chief Imam concluded by thanking Otumfuo for his dedication to national unity and for setting an example of ethical leadership that transcends religious and political divides. He encouraged other traditional and religious leaders to follow suit in resolving disputes amicably.

Community leaders present at the event lauded the Deputy Chief Imam’s remarks, noting that his call for accurate reporting and praise for Otumfuo would strengthen public confidence in the peace process and encourage harmonious coexistence in the region.
