DRUG ABUSE RISING IN WESTERN NORTH; MARIJUANA, TRAMADOL IDENTIFIED AS TOP SUBSTANCES

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has identified marijuana and tramadol as the most abused drugs among the youth in the Western North Region.
Principal Narcotics Control Officer for the region, Mr. Dennis Adutwum-Gyimah, expressed concern over the increasing use of these substances and reaffirmed NACOC’s commitment to protecting public health and safety through the control, prevention, and eradication of narcotic drug trafficking.
He said the commission is collaborating with security agencies to identify drug hotspots and intensify public education on drug demand reduction. The awareness campaigns target schools, churches, radio stations, communities, and other public gatherings to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse.
“Our focus is public health and safety, and we are working tirelessly to reduce the menace,” he said.
Mr. Adutwum-Gyimah advised the youth to stay away from drugs due to the associated social and health risks and urged traditional authorities to support NACOC’s efforts.
He further warned drug peddlers that trafficking and selling drugs are illegal and that offenders will face the full force of the law.
NACOC has intensified its enforcement and sensitisation programmes across the region to curb the growing drug abuse problem.
