Residents of Dormaa Ahenkro have been urged to report any unauthorized individuals demanding “Pay As You Dump” fees at dumping sites. The Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly has officially prohibited the collection of such fees before refuse is disposed of.
The warning follows reports that certain rogue collectors had stationed themselves at various dumping sites in the municipal capital, demanding money from residents seeking to dispose of refuse. These actions, the Assembly says, are illegal and contravene the Local Government Act of 2016 (Act 936), which outlines the proper procedures for approving by-laws and fees.
Hon. Adama Yeboah, Presiding Member of the Assembly, emphasized that the “Pay As You Dump” levy was not included in the approved fee-fixing resolution or the Assembly’s recent budget. He described the collection of money by unauthorized persons as “illegal, null, and void,” instructing them to vacate the sites imimmediately.
The move comes after widespread complaints from residents and heated debates on local radio stations. Authorities are taking a firm stand to protect citizens from exploitation and ensure that only Assembly-sanctioned levies are implemented.
Residents have welcomed the decision, calling it a major step toward transparency and accountability in waste management. The Assembly has promised to monitor the situation closely and enforce the law against any violators.
