Editorial : Who Qualifies To Be A Council of state member? Ghanaians Quizzed

The Council of State is a vital institution in Ghana’s governance structure, mandated to counsel the President on national issues. But have you ever wondered who qualifies to be a member of this esteemed council? ¹

According to Article 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Council of State comprises prominent citizens who possess the requisite expertise and experience to provide informed guidance to the President. So, who makes the cut?

Ex-Officio Members
The following individuals automatically qualify as ex-officio members of the Council of State:

– A former Chief Justice of Ghana
– A former Chief of the Defence Staff
– A former Inspector General of Police
– The President of the National House of Chiefs

Elected Representatives

Each of Ghana’s 16 regions elects a representative to the Council of State. These representatives are chosen by the members of the Regional House of Chiefs.

Presidential Appointees
The President of Ghana appoints 11 members to the Council of State. These appointees are typically individuals with distinguished careers in various fields, including politics, law, medicine, and traditional leadership.
