NEW OGBOJO RESIDENTS PROTEST  UNLAWFUL EVICTION ATTEMPT BY ALLEGED NATIONAL SECURITY  OPERATIVES: Appeal for IGP, Gov’t Intervention

Residents of New Ogbojo, a suburb of Accra, have protested what they describe as an unlawful attempt by land guards to evict them from their homes.

According to the residents, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, January 10, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m., when the son of the late Mr. Evans Teye, a real estate developer, allegedly arrived in the community with excavators, lockers, land guards and persons believed to be security operatives.

The residents alleged that the group attempted to demolish houses and forcibly eject occupants without presenting any court order or lawful authorization from a court of competent jurisdiction.

They claimed that the land in question was illegally acquired by the late Mr. Evans Teye and that portions of the land had been legitimately sold to private developers several decades ago.

According to the residents, they have lived peacefully on the land for more than 40 years, having developed their homes without any interference until the events of Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses alleged that about 60 land guards and security personnel were involved in the operation, affecting approximately 160 residents currently occupying the land.

Some residents accused the group of issuing threats and causing damage to property, acts they described as criminal offences under Ghanaian law.

The residents cited the legal principle of adverse possession, arguing that continuous and uninterrupted occupation of land for more than 12 years without objection extinguishes the original owner’s title.

They also maintained that eviction, where lawful, must follow due legal process, adding that the use of land guards has been outlawed in Ghana.

The residents have therefore appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the government, and other security agencies to intervene to restore calm and prevent further disturbance in the community.

FULL PRESS STATEMENT BY RESIDENTS

The residents, in a statement signed by their leader, Mr. Jonas Obodai Torto, expressed concern over what they described as a looming security threat in the area and called on state authorities to ensure peace.

They warned that the continued presence of land guards had created fear and tension in the community and urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
