Checks by The Hawk News have confirmed that reports claiming four police officers were killed in violent clashes at Sampa, Bono Region, are false.
The disturbances, which broke out on Tuesday, 10th September 2024, were linked to a chieftaincy dispute after news spread that the National House of Chiefs had gazetted Nana Samgba Gyafla II as the legitimate Paramount Chief of Sampa.
Supporters of his rival, Nana Sammor Duah II, allegedly launched an armed attack with short guns, firing indiscriminately, burning sections of the market, and torching the residence of Nana Gyafla II. In the chaos, 65-year-old Raheal Abena Anima was fatally shot inside the chief’s house. The residence of Abu Mahama, head of Nana Gyafla’s family, was also set ablaze.
A police patrol team, led by ASP Stanley Baku and ASP Solomon Okyere, rushed to contain the violence but came under fire. Three officers—Const. Boakye Theophilus, Const. Danso Asare and Const. Osei Emmanuel sustained minor gunshot wounds. They were treated at Sampa Hospital and later discharged.
The Hawk News can confirm that no police officer died in the incident, contrary to the rumours making the rounds.
Police reinforcements have since restored calm, with patrols continuing across the town to prevent further escalation.
