The Ashanti Regional Executives of the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) has warned its members not to increase the lorry fare on their own. According to the Ashanti Regional Executives, some tricycle stations within Greater Kumasi, notably the Dr. Mensah Tricycle Station, Suame Roundabout to Tafo Route, and other stations, have unilaterally increased transport fares without following due process.
Speaking with the media, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG), Mr. Seidu Mubarak, said the National Executive Council has the authority to deliberate and approve any adjustments to tricycle transport fares.
He said, “We hereby advise all tricycle riders and operators in the region and Greater Kumasi to maintain the current existing transport fares.” He therefore urged the general public to continue paying the existing approved fares and not comply with any unauthorized fare hikes.
BRIEF:
Some transport operators have been known to take advantage of peak hours, fuel price increases, or other circumstances to unilaterally hike transport fares, often citing increased operational costs as justification. However, such actions are often not sanctioned by the relevant authorities and can be seen as exploitative.
These unauthorized fare increases can have a significant impact on commuters, particularly those who rely on public transportation for their daily activities. The increased financial burden can lead to frustration and hardship, especially for low-income earners and students.
Furthermore, such actions can also undermine the efforts of transport unions and authorities to regulate and standardize transport fares. When some operators increase fares without approval, it can create confusion and mistrust among commuters, making it challenging to maintain a fair and efficient transportation system.
It is essential for transport authorities to monitor and enforce regulations to prevent unauthorized fare increases and protect the interests of commuters. By doing so, they can ensure that transportation remains affordable and reliable for all users.
