PHILANTHROPIST RECLAIMS 10 ACRES OF GALAMSEY-RAVAGED LAND IN WASSA DOMEABRA ● Urges Government to Support Expansion

Residents of Wassa Domeabra and local leaders in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region have expressed appreciation for the recent reclamation of 10 acres of land devastated by illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” by philanthropist Maxwell Opoku Agyemang.

Mr. Opoku Agyemang has appealed to the government and key stakeholders to prioritize land reclamation efforts and provide support to expand his vision of restoring galamsey-degraded areas across the country.

Already working to reclaim and replant trees and cash crops on lands destroyed by illegal mining in Wassa Domeabra, he specifically requested official documentation to legitimize and scale up his efforts. “The government should recognize my commitment, even though I am not involved in any mining activity, and grant me the necessary documents so I can continue this vital work more effectively,” he said.

Operating strictly within legal frameworks, Opoku Agyemang expressed his readiness to travel to other parts of the country where mining activities have left land degraded. He envisions transforming these areas by planting economically viable cash crops such as cocoa, palm trees, and coconuts, helping the government recover lost plantations and ensure food security.

He also delivered a stern message to miners who fail to reclaim their sites: “I urge miners who mine without reclaiming the land to do the needful urgently, always ensuring reclamation for the benefit of others,” he said.

Furthermore, Opoku Agyemang appealed to the government and the Minerals Commission to streamline processes for individuals passionate about reclamation. He suggested that documentation for such initiatives should be made readily accessible at the district and municipal assembly levels. He also advised all stakeholders, including miners and regulatory authorities, to prioritize reclamation and the cultivation of cash and food crops to ensure both environmental restoration and national food security.
