UMMAAG WARNS MoMo AGENTS AGAINST FRAUDULENT SIM OWNERSHIP TRANSFERS ● Association says regularisation exercise has not commenced

The United Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (UMMAAG) has cautioned Mobile Money (MoMo) agents across the country against falling victim to fraudsters posing as intermediaries to facilitate the change or transfer of ownership of agent business SIM cards.

The association said it had received increasing reports of individuals approaching MoMo agents with promises of facilitating the regularisation of their agent SIM cards in exchange for money, only for such transactions to turn out to be fraudulent.

In a press statement issued in Accra on Thursday, November 5, 2026, UMMAAG clarified that the official change-of-ownership and regularisation exercise for agent business SIM cards had not yet commenced.

The association warned that anyone claiming to have the capacity to facilitate the process for a fee should be treated as fraudulent, urging agents not to trust individuals who claim to have special connections or access to expedite the exercise.

UMMAAG further disclosed that some unscrupulous individuals were impersonating staff of Mobile Money Fintech Ltd (MMFL) to exploit agents anxious about regularising their SIM cards and retaining access to their MoMo agent accounts.

According to the association, these individuals demand substantial sums of money from unsuspecting agents, but in many instances, the promised services are never delivered. It stressed that MMFL and its partners do not charge agents for the transfer of ownership of their business SIM cards.5

The association acknowledged the frustration and anxiety among agents arising from the ongoing Know Your Customer (KYC) Update Exercise, particularly concerns about potentially losing access to their MoMo agent accounts. However, it urged members to remain vigilant, patient and cautious while avoiding unauthorised transactions.

UMMAAG encouraged all agents to complete the ongoing KYC Update Exercise despite the challenges they might encounter, advising those experiencing difficulties to visit the nearest MTN office for the necessary assistance.

The association also appealed to MMFL to urgently address the technical challenges affecting the KYC update process, following the extension granted, to ensure that all agents could complete the exercise smoothly on or before December 31, 2026.

UMMAAG assured agents that its leadership would officially communicate when the necessary clearance had been granted for the change-of-ownership and regularisation exercise to begin. It reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of Mobile Money agents and urged them not to pay anyone for a service that had not officially commenced.

FRAUD ALERT REGARDING CHANGE/TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP OF AGENT BUSINESS SIMs

The leadership of the United Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (UMMAAG) has noted with grave concern the increasing reports of Mobile Money Agents being approached by individuals promising to facilitate the change of ownership (regularisation) of Agent SIMs in exchange for money, only for such transactions to turn out to be fraudulent.

UMMAAG wishes to inform all Mobile Money Agents, particularly those seeking to change or transfer ownership of their Agent SIMs, that the change-of-ownership/regularisation exercise has NOT yet commenced.

Therefore, any individual claiming to have the capacity to facilitate a change or transfer of ownership for a fee should be treated as fraudulent and must not be trusted.5

We have also received reports of unscrupulous individuals impersonating staff of Mobile Money Fintech Ltd (MMFL) and taking advantage of Agents who are anxious to regularise or transfer ownership of their Agent SIMs. These individuals demand substantial sums of money and, in many cases, the promised service is never delivered.

FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT,

Mobile Money Fintech Ltd (MMFL) and other partners do not charge Agents for the transfer of ownership.

Agents across the country are strongly advised not to make payments to individuals claiming to have special access, connections or the ability to facilitate the process.

We understand the frustration and anxiety arising from the ongoing KYC Update Exercise, particularly among Agents who are concerned about losing access to their MoMo Agent accounts. However, we urge everyone to remain vigilant, patient and cautious.

The leadership of UMMAAG will officially communicate to Agents when the necessary clearance has been given for the change-of-ownership/regularisation exercise to commence.

In the meantime, every Agent is strongly encouraged to complete the ongoing KYC Update Exercise, notwithstanding any challenges or difficulties encountered. Agents experiencing difficulties with the KYC update may visit the nearest MTN office for assistance.

We are also urging MMFL, having acknowledged the extension granted, to address the technical challenges surrounding the ongoing KYC UPDATE EXERCISE to enable all Agents to complete the process smoothly on or before 31st December 2026.

Do not pay anyone for a service that has not officially commenced.

UMMAAG remains committed to protecting the interests of all Mobile Money Agents.

END.

ISSUED BY MANAGEMENT ON THIS DAY, 5TH NOVEMBER 2026, ACCRA.
