Cocoa farmers under the Adebowura Cocoa Cooperative in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region have expressed concern over what they describe as unfair distribution of government-supplied fertiliser to farmers.
The Cooperative Chairman, Mr. Bismark Offin, a former Assembly Member for Adobewura No. 2, said the situation has created frustration among farmers, alleging that fertiliser meant for cocoa farmers is being hoarded instead of being distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
According to him, the alleged hoarding is depriving farmers of the inputs they need to maintain their cocoa farms and improve productivity, particularly at a time when the cost of farming inputs continues to put pressure on cocoa producers.
Mr. Offin disclosed that about 80 farmers are expected to share only ten bottles of fertiliser, describing the allocation as woefully inadequate and unacceptable.
He contrasted the situation with what he described as the practice under the previous government, where, according to him, every farmer received a fair share of fertiliser to support their farming activities.
Mr. Offin therefore appealed to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and other relevant agencies to urgently investigate the whereabouts of the fertilisers intended for farmers in the area.
He said the current situation had left farmers disappointed, arguing that the government had failed to adequately meet the expectations of cocoa farmers who rely on fertiliser support to sustain production.
The Cooperative Chairman called for immediate action to ensure that fertiliser meant for farmers reaches the intended beneficiaries, urging COCOBOD and the relevant authorities to probe the alleged hoarding and discrimination and take appropriate action.
