The Ghana Association of Elected Assembly Members (GAAM) has petitioned the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) over the suspension of the 2025 District Level By-elections across the country.
In a formal petition addressed to the Chairperson of the Commission in Accra, the Association expressed concern about what it described as the abrupt decision to put the elections on hold after earlier communication had indicated that the process was ongoing.
According to GAAM, the EC, through a press release dated October 29, 2025, announced the reopening of nominations for the District Level By-elections. The statement was signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tetteh.
However, in a subsequent release dated November 3, 2025, and signed by the Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Fred Tetteh, the Commission announced that the by-elections had been put on hold until further notice.
GAAM noted that many prospective candidates across various electoral areas had already begun preparations to contest for the vacant positions. These preparations, the Association said, included filing nomination forms and engaging with community members ahead of the polls.
Describing the development as regrettable, the Association stated that the sudden suspension at what it termed the “eleventh hour” had created uncertainty among aspirants and stakeholders at the grassroots level.
The Association further emphasised that vacant electoral area positions must be filled promptly to ensure effective representation and smooth administration within the local governance structure.
GAAM has therefore called on the Electoral Commission to, as a matter of urgency, provide clear reasons for the suspension and announce a new date for the conduct of the elections.
The petition warned that failure to receive a positive response from the Commission within two clear weeks would compel the Association to seek redress in the law courts.
The petition was signed by the National President of GAAM, Hon. Ackah Nelson Frank, who expressed hope that the Commission would give the matter the needed attention in the interest of transparency, accountability and democratic governance.

The Chairperson

PETITION AGAINST CANCELLATION OF DISTRICT LEVEL BY-ELECTIONS
Having notified the general public through your outfit via a press release dated October 29, 2025, captioned “Reopening of Nominations District Level By-elections, 2025,” signed by the Deputy Chairman (Operations), Mr. Samuel Tetteh, and a further release dated November 3, 2025, signed by the Deputy Director, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Department, Mr. Fred Tetteh, putting the said by-elections on hold until further notice across the country,
The above Association (GAAM) has observed with keen interest the preparations made by many individuals to contest for such vacant positions in various electoral areas across the country. The sudden cancellation at the eleventh hour is very regrettable and has created uncertainty among aspirants and stakeholders.
We therefore call on your outfit, as a matter of urgency, to conduct the said elections as soon as possible.
Failure to receive a positive response from your high office on this matter within two clear weeks will pave the way for the Association to seek redress in the law courts.
We count on your usual cooperation and hope this petition will be given the needed attention it deserves.
Thank you.
Signed:
…………………
