Tabakrom’s Struggle for Basic Amenities, Call For Gov’t Intervention

Residents of Tabakrom, a farming community in the Nzema East Municipal of the Western Region, have expressed worries over the lack of social amenities in the area, calling on authorities to come to their aid to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“Despite persistent appeals to the government and the Assembly regarding the urgent need to provide basic amenities in our community, nothing has been done to alleviate our plight. We lack network services, roads, bridges, schools, electricity, portable water, and proper sanitation facilities, causing people to defecate anywhere, which creates another problem for the community,” the residents lamented.

The residents urged the government to focus on the rapid infrastructural development of the community.

Opinion leaders stated that the absence of roads, bridges, and poor communication services in the community has worsened the situation, and they are calling on the Assembly and the government to assist the community in constructing a new school facility to replace the existing dilapidated one, which has seen no renovation for several years.

However, the residents have accused the leadership of the district Assembly of failing to provide the community with these essential amenities since taking office.

The lack of social amenities in rural areas like Tabakrom is a widespread issue that affects many communities. The absence of basic services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation facilities has a devastating impact on the quality of life of residents. Many rural communities rely on outdated and inadequate infrastructure, making it difficult for residents to access essential services.

In addition to the lack of physical infrastructure, rural areas often suffer from a shortage of skilled professionals, including teachers, healthcare workers, and engineers. This shortage exacerbates the existing challenges and makes it even more difficult for communities to access basic services. The government and other stakeholders must prioritize the development of rural areas and invest in the provision of social amenities to bridge the gap between rural and urban communities.

The impact of the lack of social amenities in rural areas is not limited to the residents themselves. It also has far-reaching consequences for the national economy and development. When rural communities lack access to basic services, they are unable to contribute fully to the national economy. This can lead to increased poverty and inequality, which can have long-term effects on national development.

To address the issue of social amenities in rural areas, the government and other stakeholders must adopt a multifaceted approach. This includes investing in the development of physical infrastructure, recruiting and training skilled professionals, and implementing policies that promote equitable access to basic services. By prioritizing the development of rural areas, Ghana can reduce poverty and inequality, promote economic growth, and ensure that all citizens have access to the services they need to thrive.

Ultimately, the lack of social amenities in rural areas is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive and sustained response. By working together, the government, civil society, and other stakeholders can ensure that all Ghanaians, regardless of where they live, have access to the basic services they need to lead healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
