Great contributions of Physician Assistants- PAs (BSc) in Ghana appear to have been going unrecognized for decades by successive Gov’t of Ghana.
(1) Since the 1970s to date PA profession has existed but appears to be neglected.
(2) PAs attended to and saved many precious lives, over 70% of the population of Ghanaian citizens who access essential health care services.
However, the profession had faced various forms of sabotage or unfair treatment from medical Doctors leadership and medical and Dental Council (MDC), Gh.
(3) PA training in Ghana is intensive, thus why we could do a lot, even some medical doctors cannot do, but they have always used their monopoly and power to overshadow us, whiles they are always taking the glory; monkey dey work, baboon dey chop.
(4) If the NDC Gov’t will be bold enough to mount a globally recognized PAs Specialization training program in OBS and Gynea, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Neuro, Cardio, Renal, etc., as is done in the USA, other African countries that have clinical officers, such monopoly & unnecessary loss of precious lives caused by medical Drs over trivial issues could be greatly reduced.
(5) The monopoly by the medical Drs question has always been a deliberate strategic plan, not empathy, in order to protect or uphold their personal interests over the lives of citizens whose taxpayers are uses to pay them huge packages.
(6) The truth/facts be told: PAs in Ghana are highly trained in clinical medicine, and widely distributed and work at the health facilities acros the length and breath of Ghana, ranging from teaching hospitals, district hospitals, polyclinics, private hospitals, mental hospitals, to health centres (as facility head); these institutions fall under MoH/GHS, Mental Health Authority (MHA), CHAG, Universities, etc.
(7) Finally, the Professional Qualification of the writer: Trained and practiced as a Registered mental health nurse (RMN), & upgraded, and currently practicing medicine and mental health in a Psychiatric hospital in Ghana, as a Principal Physician Assistant (PPA) 2013 to date.
