Ghana’s Youth Need Jobs, Not Just Betting Relief- Constance Kwame Agbedienu

His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, has demonstrated his commitment to Ghanaians’ well-being by abolishing the 10% withholding tax on lottery winnings. This move provides relief to those participating in sports betting and lottery. However, it doesn’t address the broader issue of youth unemployment.

Betting cannot replace stable, dignified jobs. The recent public sector employment freeze will make it difficult for young Ghanaians to secure meaningful work. While promoting private sector growth is important, the government must provide employment in essential sectors like education, healthcare, and security services.

Many young Ghanaians graduate with potential, eager to contribute to national development. Without job opportunities, they’re left frustrated and uncertain. Removing the betting tax offers temporary financial relief but doesn’t solve the crisis. Ghana’s youth need sustainable jobs, better vocational training, and a clear path to economic independence.

The government must reconsider the employment freeze. Ghana’s youth are hardworking and ready to serve, but they need opportunities. Betting can never replace employment, and the nation’s progress depends on equipping young people with tools for success.
