A senior member of Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made allegations of corruption within the party.
Rasheed Abdul, Deputy organiser for the Atwima Nwabiagya South constituency in the Ashanti region claims that party leaders are engaging in corrupt practices in the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
He alleges that the Johnson Asiedu Nketia camp is unfairly favouring its allies for the MMDCEs positions, and that the selection committee is compromised, with members collecting bribes and awarding positions to individuals who did not work for the party.
These allegations have raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the MMDCEs selection process. The NDC party has not yet commented on the allegations.
Abdul and his team have worked tirelessly to bring the party into power, but they feel betrayed by the party’s leadership. They believe that the selection process is compromised, and that party members may take matters into their own hands if their concerns are not addressed.
The NDC party is currently in power, having lost the 2020 presidential election to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but these allegations of corruption could damage its reputation and erode trust among party members.
Abdul has warned that if the party fails to listen to the concerns of its grassroots supporters, it may find itself in opposition for the next four years.
He has also revealed that he was injured by some NPP thugs who believed his actions would send them into opposition. Despite still suffering from his injuries, Abdul is now calling on the NDC’s top executives to listen to the concerns of party members.
The NDC party must take these allegations seriously and investigate the claims to ensure that the selection process is free from corruption and bias. The party’s leadership must prioritise transparency, fairness, and accountability in its selection processes to maintain the trust of its members and the Ghanaian people.
