Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region are still reeling from severe flooding triggered by recent heavy rains and controlled water releases from the Weija Dam, leaving several homes submerged and livelihoods disrupted.
In response to the situation, NDC Constituency Deputy Youth Organiser aspirant Stephen Kweku Nyarko has appealed to President John Mahama to urgently intervene to support affected communities and help restore normalcy in the area.
Nyarko described the situation as distressing, noting that many families have been displaced and are currently struggling to secure basic needs such as shelter, food, and clean drinking water.
He stressed that the flooding has also affected small-scale traders and workers in the constituency, many of whom have lost goods and equipment worth significant amounts.
According to him, immediate government intervention is necessary to prevent the situation from worsening, especially if rains continue in the coming days.
Nyarko further indicated that relief efforts such as the provision of temporary shelters, food supplies, and medical outreach services would go a long way in easing the burden on affected residents.
He also called on disaster management authorities and local government institutions to intensify their response and ensure that vulnerable communities are not neglected.
Beyond the flood situation, Nyarko used the opportunity to reiterate his ambition to contest the position of Constituency Deputy Youth Organiser, stating that his leadership drive is rooted in service and community development.
He highlighted his record of philanthropy, saying he has consistently supported youth empowerment initiatives, education, and social welfare programmes within the constituency.
Nyarko added that his vision for the youth wing is to build a more united and active base that can contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth and national development.
Meanwhile, residents continue to call for long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems and better dam management practices to prevent recurring flooding in the area.
Authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive update on the extent of damage, but community leaders are urging swift action to prevent further hardship as weather conditions remain unstable.
