Tension is mounting in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region following allegations that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and some suspected illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, have forcefully taken over a legally licensed small-scale mining concession belonging to a private mining company.
According to sources close to the concession owners, the disputed mining site was duly acquired through the appropriate state regulatory procedures, granting the operators legal authority to undertake mining activities within the area. However, the company now claims that heavily connected illegal miners have invaded the concession and are carrying out mining operations with alleged political backing.
The situation, according to residents and workers at the site, has created fear and tension within the community as excavators and mining equipment belonging to the alleged galamsey operators continue to operate openly on the concession despite repeated complaints to the authorities.
Information gathered indicates that the matter has officially been reported to both the District and Regional Police Commands, but no concrete action has so far been taken to halt the activities or remove the alleged illegal operators from the concession.
Sources further disclosed that several petitions and official letters have also been submitted to key state institutions, including the National Security Secretariat, the Minerals Commission, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, demanding urgent intervention and protection for the licensed concession holders.
Despite these formal complaints, the alleged illegal mining activities are said to be continuing unabated, raising concerns over possible political interference and the growing influence of galamsey operators in some mining communities across the country.
The affected concession owners are reportedly accusing state institutions of failing to enforce mining laws and protect legally acquired concessions, warning that the silence of the authorities could embolden illegal mining networks and further undermine investor confidence in Ghana’s mining sector.
Some residents in the area have also expressed worry over the environmental impact of the alleged unauthorized mining activities, particularly the destruction of farmlands and water bodies within the municipality.
The latest controversy adds to growing national concerns over illegal mining activities, which continue to pose serious threats to Ghana’s environment, water resources, and local economies despite ongoing government campaigns against galamsey operations.
Meanwhile, calls are mounting for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and security agencies to immediately investigate the allegations and take decisive action to restore law and order at the concession while ensuring that the rule of law prevails.
