The Coalition of Concerned Youth has issued a strong ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate rehabilitation of the Kumasi–Accra highway, which they describe as a “death trap.” This comes in the wake of a recent fatal accident on the route that claimed multiple lives, adding to the alarming number of fatalities attributed to the deteriorating road condition.
In a press release signed by the Coalition’s Executive Director, Richard Mensah, the group extended heartfelt condolences to families who have lost loved ones on the highway. He lamented the poor state of the road and cited available statistics indicating that its deplorable condition is a major contributing factor to the frequent accidents witnessed along the stretch.
According to the Coalition, the Kumasi–Accra highway continues to claim innocent lives, including breadwinners and children, leaving many families shattered. “How many more lives must we lose before government acts?” Mensah questioned. “This is not just a road; it has become a killing field.”
The group is calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to, within two months, award contracts and commence serious rehabilitation works on the highway. They argue that immediate intervention is not only necessary but long overdue. Failure to comply, they warn, will result in a massive blockade of the road by aggrieved youth as a form of civil protest.
“This ultimatum is not a threat, it is a desperate call for action,” the statement emphasized. “Our people deserve better. We cannot continue to bury our loved ones because of failed leadership and neglect.” The Coalition is urging stakeholders, including the media and civil society, to amplify their concerns and pressure the authorities to act.
Meanwhile, the group is encouraging the public to join their advocacy efforts and report any further accidents or road hazards on the stretch. For further information or to support the campaign, the Executive Director, Richard Mensah, can be reached on 0257477677 or 0200262790.
