Flour Users in Kumasi Threaten Protest Over Unreduced Prices Despite Cedi Gains

Flour users in the Ashanti Region have announced plans to stage a major demonstration against the government and flour manufacturing companies over what they describe as an unjustifiable refusal to reduce flour prices, despite the recent appreciation of the Ghana Cedi against the US dollar.

According to the group, the continued high cost of flour, particularly by leading manufacturers such as Olam Agri, is negatively impacting their operations. They blame both the government and flour producers for failing to take steps to reduce prices in line with current economic trends.

Speaking to The Citizen newspaper, Mr. Smart Agyeman, Secretary of the Ashanti Flour Users Association, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current situation. He singled out Olam Agri for increasing the price of a bag of flour to GH¢730, even though the Cedi has appreciated by nearly 16 percent against the US dollar since April 2025.

Mr. Agyeman noted that earlier in the year, when the Cedi began to strengthen, the price of a bag of flour from Olam stood at GH¢710. He believes the company’s refusal to adjust its pricing downwards is unfair and inconsistent with market expectations.

“In 2022, producers attributed the high cost of flour to the depreciation of the Cedi, which made wheat imports more expensive,” he explained. “Now that the local currency is gaining strength, it is only fair that prices are reduced—just as some local companies have done with baking essentials such as margarine and sugar.”

He described the continued high prices as a form of economic injustice and disrespect to bakers across the country. He therefore called on the Ministry of Trade and Industry to intervene and engage flour manufacturers, especially Olam Agri, to ensure fair pricing.

“If the government fails to act, we will have no choice but to stage a massive protest to demand accountability and fairness,” he warned.
