GOV’T SEEKS PARTNERS: Over Nat’l Airline

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that the government is actively seeking strategic partnerships to establish a national airline. According to the Minister, given the current economic challenges facing the country, the government is unable to independently set up a national carrier. Instead, efforts are being directed at identifying credible partners who can support the vision of establishing a sustainable and competitive airline for Ghana.

Speaking to staff of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Joseph Bukari Nikpe shared that a shortlist of potential partners will soon be revealed as part of efforts to bring the national airline to life. “We are looking for a partnership to establish a national airline. When it comes to partnership, it will take time. We have to know who they are — to partner with you to bring in a national carrier that will fly for a very long time,” he said.

Ghana has been without a national airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004 and the subsequent failure of Ghana International Airlines in 2010. While there have been several discussions in the past about reviving a national carrier, none have materialized.

The absence of a national airline has posed significant challenges for Ghanaians traveling abroad. Many have had to rely on foreign carriers, often at exorbitant prices, which has put a strain on the country’s economy. The lack of a national carrier has also limited the country’s ability to promote its culture, tourism, and trade globally.

Furthermore, the reliance on international airlines has resulted in limited flight options and schedules, making it difficult for Ghanaians to travel conveniently. This has had a ripple effect on the country’s economy, particularly in the tourism and business sectors.

The challenges faced by Ghanaians traveling abroad have been compounded by the high costs associated with flying. Without a national carrier, Ghanaians have had to pay premium prices for flights, which has made international travel inaccessible to many. This has had significant implications for the country’s diaspora community, who often rely on air travel to visit family and friends.

Additionally, the absence of a national airline has limited Ghana’s participation in global aviation networks. This has resulted in reduced connectivity and limited access to international markets, which has hindered the country’s economic growth and development.

The establishment of a national airline would not only provide Ghanaians with more convenient and affordable travel options but also promote the country’s interests globally. A national carrier would be able to project Ghana’s image and culture, while also facilitating trade and tourism.

The government’s efforts to establish a national airline are a step in the right direction. With the right partnership and support, Ghana can revive its national carrier and reap the benefits of having a strong and competitive airline.
