Illegal Mining Menace: Bibiani District Forestry Manager Calls for Quicker Prosecution of Offenders to Deter Others

Mr. Kobina Adu Baiden, the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Forestry Manager in the Western North Region, has made a passionate plea for the swift prosecution of individuals engaging in illegal mining activities within the protected forest reserves. He emphasized that swift legal action is necessary to serve as a deterrent and curb the growing menace of illegal mining.

“The illegal mining activities are causing irreparable damage to our forests and water bodies,” Mr. Baiden stated. “If we fail to take decisive action, we risk losing our natural resources forever. Prosecuting offenders will send a strong message that illegal mining will not be tolerated.”

The Manager’s plea comes amid growing concerns over the devastating impact of illegal mining on the environment and local communities, exacerbated by the slow pace of prosecution. The activities have resulted in widespread deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution, threatening the livelihoods of those dependent on the forests.

Mr. Baiden commended the Forestry Commission’s rapid response team for arresting several individuals involved in illegal mining but stressed the need for swift prosecution to ensure justice. “We must ensure that those arrested are prosecuted and punished accordingly. This will serve as a deterrent and help curb illegal mining activities.”

Mr. Baiden called on civil society organizations, the media, and traditional leaders to support the fight against illegal mining. He emphasized the need for decisive action to protect the country’s natural resources. “We need to take bold action to address the illegal mining menace. I urge CSOs, the media, and relevant stakeholders to support the fight. Prosecuting offenders is crucial to protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable future.”

The government has assured the public of its commitment to addressing the issue, promising to work closely with the Forestry Commission and law enforcement agencies to ensure swift prosecution.

Mr. Baiden highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to combat illegal mining. “We must work together with local communities, law enforcement, and environmental groups to protect our natural resources.”

Additionally, the Manager emphasized the importance of education and awareness in preventing illegal mining. “We need to educate the public about the devastating impact of illegal mining and encourage them to report suspicious activities.”

In conclusion, Mr. Baiden’s plea for quicker prosecution of illegal mining offenders is a crucial step towards protecting the country’s natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future. It is essential that we take bold action to address this menace and work together to safeguard our environment.
