SUSPEND MINING ACTIVITIES NOW: Nana Siaw Warns Gov’t

Nana Kwaku Siaw, a renowned farmer and CEO of Kumah Farms and Training Centre, has made a passionate appeal to the government of Ghana to suspend all mining activities for approximately one year. This, he believes, is necessary to prevent a catastrophic environmental disaster that could have far-reaching consequences, exceeding even those of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Nana Siaw, illegal mining, particularly galamsey, is wreaking havoc on Ghana’s natural resources, destroying water bodies, land, and cocoa farms. He emphasizes that foreigners are also significantly contributing to this environmental degradation.

Nana Siaw further suggests that the government’s current approach to supervising mining activities is ineffective, as personnel often accept bribes and fail to enforce regulations. To address this, he recommends employing military personnel, utilizing helicopters to monitor and prevent illegal mining activities, thereby ensuring accurate records and minimizing corruption.

By implementing these measures, Nana Siaw is confident that Ghana can reclaim its natural resources and restore its environment. His appeal underscores the urgent need for decisive action to mitigate the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s ecosystem.

Galamsey has become a major threat to Ghana’s environment, causing widespread pollution and destruction of natural resources. The illegal mining activities have led to the contamination of water bodies, making it difficult for communities to access clean water. Additionally, the destruction of forests and cocoa farms has resulted in loss of biodiversity and livelihoods for many farmers.

The impact of galamsey is not limited to environmental degradation; it also has severe social and economic consequences. Many communities have been displaced due to the destruction of their homes and farms. Furthermore, the illegal mining activities have led to an increase in crime and violence, as rival groups fight for control of mining sites.

The government’s failure to effectively address the issue of galamsey has led to widespread frustration and anger among citizens. Many are calling for decisive action to be taken to stop the illegal mining activities and restore Ghana’s environment. Nana Siaw’s appeal is a timely reminder of the urgent need for action to address this critical issue.
