W/R: Amenfi East MCE Sets Record Straight on Galamsey Reportage, Denies Factual Basis

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Wassa Amenfi East, Hon. Korankye Frederick, has responded to recent media reports on galamsey activities in the area, denying the factual accuracy of the claims made.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, September 12, 2024, the MCE described the reports as “misleading” and “exaggerated,” stating that they do not reflect the true situation on the ground.

“The reports are grossly misleading and do not reflect our efforts to combat galamsey in Amenfi West. We are working hard to protect our environment and ensure sustainable development in the municipality,” he said.

The MCE emphasized that while galamsey remains a challenge in the region, the municipality has taken concrete steps to address the issue and prevent further environmental degradation. He criticized the reporter for not doing due diligence and for reporting based on emotions.

The MCE explained that four mining companies have been assigned concessions in the area where the reportage was made, and he wondered why the reporter failed to cross-check with the Municipal Assembly before broadcasting the outcome.

“We have established a task force to monitor and prevent galamsey activities, and we are working closely with traditional authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that our efforts are effective,” he said.

Hon. Korankye expressed concern about the impact of misinformation on the public and stakeholders, urging them to be cautious of unverified reports.

“We understand the concern of the public and stakeholders, but we must be careful not to spread misinformation,” he said. “We are committed to transparency and open communication, and we will continue to provide accurate information on our efforts to combat galamsey.”

The MCE assured that the municipality remains committed to sustainable development and environmental protection, and that efforts are underway to ensure that mining activities in the area are conducted in a responsible and environmentally friendly manner.

The statement comes after recent media reports suggested that galamsey activities were on the rise in Amenfi West, with some reports claiming that the municipality was losing the fight against illegal mining. However, the MCE’s statement sets the record straight, providing accurate information on the municipality’s efforts to combat galamsey and protect the environment.
