ORAG COMMENDS GOV’T: Pleads for age limit reduction

Press Release:

To: The Honorable Minister of Transport, Government of Ghana
From: Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG)

Introduction

The Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) extends heartfelt gratitude to the government and the Minister of Transport for fulfilling their campaign promise to legalize and regularize the Okada business. This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment, safety, and promoting economic growth.

Appreciation and Request

We appreciate the efforts to bring order and structure to the industry. However, we humbly request that the government reconsider the constitutional requirement to operate a commercial vehicle at the age of 25. While we understand the existing law, we believe this requirement warrants re-examination.

Rationale

– Youth Employment: Approximately 40% of our riders (around 1 million) are between 18 and 25 years old, already engaged in the business.

National Security Concerns:

Displacing this large number of riders could pose national security risks if they are forced into unemployment.
– *Economic Impact*: Adjusting the age threshold could foster economic growth and job creation.

Conclusion

We respectfully request that the government consider our plea and revisit the age requirement. We believe this adjustment will promote economic stability and social harmony.
