TODAY’S SILENCE, TOMORROW’S REGRET: THE COST OF IGNORING INJUSTICE; Nana Moses Writes

Ghana, once regarded as a shining example of democracy in Africa, is now witnessing a troubling decline in democratic freedoms. Under the current administration led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), there is a growing pattern of state institutions being used to intimidate, harass, and silence citizens who speak out against the government.

Journalists, activists, political analysts, and ordinary Ghanaians who voice dissent are being subjected to arbitrary arrests, investigations, and public threats. Institutions meant to serve the people — including the police, national security, and other regulatory bodies — are increasingly being weaponized to protect the government from criticism, rather than uphold justice and the rule of law.

What is even more disturbing is the silence and complicity of individuals and groups who once championed the cause of free speech and democracy when they were in opposition. Today, those same voices see nothing wrong with the suppression of freedoms simply because their party is in power.

But power is not permanent. One day, the roles will reverse, and those who are silent today will be the loudest voices crying for justice and freedom of expression. It is hypocritical to defend oppression simply because it benefits your side politically.

This is not about party politics — this is about the soul of our nation. Ghana belongs to all of us, and we must all rise above partisan interests to protect the pillars of democracy: free speech, justice, and equality before the law.
