The menace of galamsey and opioid abuse has reached alarming proportions in Ghana, with many lives lost and families torn apart. In a passionate plea, Imam Sulemana Iddrisu Bamba, First Deputy Chief Imam of the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, has called on the government, parents, and community leaders to take decisive action to combat these twin evils. Imam Bamba expressed deep concern about the devastating impact of opioid abuse on the nation’s youth. “Opioid addicts and other substance abusers can ruin the future of the youth,” he warned.
The Imam emphasized the importance of parental guidance, urging parents to “keep an eye on their wards in schools and elsewhere.” He stressed that parents have a crucial role to play in preventing substance abuse among young people.
Imam Bamba also called on the government to take firm action against those who carry and sell drugs on the streets. He identified the lack of effective law enforcement as a major cause of the proliferation of illicit drugs.
Furthermore, the Imam urged his fellow Imams to use their pulpits to preach against substance abuse and galamsey. “We must use our platforms to educate our congregations about the dangers of these behaviors,” he said.
Specifically, Imam Bamba called on those selling in mini provision stores, who in turn use the opportunities to sell illicit drugs in the various Zongos (communities), to stop their activities. “Those engaging in this illicit trade must desist,” he emphasized.
The Imam’s call for collective action is seen as a welcome move by many Ghanaians. His leadership in this effort is expected to inspire others to join the fight against galamsey and opioid abuse.
Imam Bamba’s plea to parents, government, and community leaders highlights the need for a multi-faceted approach to addressing these issues. Education, law enforcement, and community engagement are all crucial in combating substance abuse and galamsey.
The Imam’s initiative has sparked widespread support, with many calling for increased efforts to protect the nation’s youth and preserve the environment.
As the nation grapples with these challenges, Imam Bamba’s call to action serves as a timely reminder of the need for collective efforts to build a safer and healthier society for all Ghanaians.
