A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Amenfi West Constituency of the western region, Mr. Obed Asamoa has criticized the National Democratic Congress’s promise to introduce a 24-hour economy in Ghana, claiming it will lead to an increase in “slay queens” rather than genuine economic growth.
Speaking in an interview with the Dailytymesgh.com, the NPP, Amenfi west constituency chairman argued that plan would only benefit a selected few, particularly young women who would use the opportunity to engage in immoral activities under the guise of entrepreneurship.
“This 24-hour economy will only breed slay queens who will use the cover of darkness to engage in all sorts of immoral activities,” the stalwart said. “It will not create any meaningful jobs or stimulate economic growth as Mahama claims.”
The stalwart further argued that the NDC’s focus on a 24-hour economy is a ploy to distract Ghanaians from the party’s lack of vision and policies to address the country’s economic challenges.
“Mahama and his team are only interested in promoting a culture of hedonism and immorality, rather than addressing the real issues affecting Ghanaians,” he said.
However, in a rebuttal the supporters of John Mahama and the NDC have dismissed the NPP claims, arguing that the 24-hour economy is a well-thought-out policy aimed at stimulating economic growth and providing more job opportunities for Ghanaians.
“The 24-hour economy is a game-changer for Ghana’s economy, and we will not allow the NPP to distract us from its implementation,” an NDC spokesperson said.
The debate highlights the ongoing political rivalry between the NPP and NDC, with each side seeking to discredit the other’s policies and initiatives.
It remains to be seen how John Mahama’s 24-hour economy will unfold if he wins the next election, and whether it will achieve its intended goals or lead to unintended consequences.
