MPASATIA MINING TRAGEDY: Aspiring DCE for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Sakina Oforiwaa, Consoles Bereaved Family and Constituents

I’m saddened by the news of two dead and others trapped in the mining site collapse at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti region. My condolences go to the bereaved family for their loss, and I pray that Almighty Allah will strengthen them during this challenging time.

Currently, I’m informed that some individuals are still trapped beneath the debris and yet to be retrieved. I hope the rescue team will find them soon.

In these challenging times, I urge all constituents to remain calm and avoid any form of illegality. With this NDC government, we will soon see zero unemployment and illegal mining in our communities.

We call on individuals to take responsibility in the fight against illegal mining to prevent such incidents elsewhere.

Galamsey’s Devastating Impact on Communities and Youth

Galamsey, a term used to describe illegal small-scale mining in Ghana, has become a significant threat to the country’s agricultural sector and youth employment. The practice has led to land degradation, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity, ultimately exacerbating youth unemployment and undermining food security. In communities like Mpasatia, galamsey activities have terrorized residents, causing widespread destruction of arable lands and water bodies, rendering them unusable for farming.

Youth Unemployment and Migration

The allure of quick wealth from galamsey has lured thousands of youths away from agriculture, further exacerbating labor shortages in the sector. This shift has led to reduced agricultural productivity, economic losses, and social problems such as poverty, migration, and conflict. Youth involvement in galamsey often fuels these conflicts, undermining social harmony and community relationships.

Social and Economic Consequences

Galamsey’s impact on communities extends beyond environmental degradation. The practice has sparked social unrest and conflict, particularly in rural areas where competition for land, water, and resources is intense. Family disintegration and breakdown of traditional social structures are also common consequences of galamsey, as youth abandon their agricultural heritage for the promise of quick wealth.

Community Displacement and Health Risks

The destruction of agricultural lands and water bodies due to galamsey activities has led to the displacement of communities, forcing youth to migrate to urban centers in search of alternative livelihoods. Moreover, exposure to hazardous chemicals and poor sanitation in galamsey sites poses significant health risks to young people.

Call to Action

To mitigate the effects of galamsey, it’s essential to provide alternative livelihoods for youth in agriculture, rehabilitate degraded lands, and educate the public about the importance of agricultural youth employment. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government, chiefs, and community members, are necessary to combat illegal mining and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Hope for the Future

With leaders like Hon. Sakina Oforiwaa advocating for responsible mining practices and promising to eradicate unemployment and illegal mining, there’s hope for a brighter future for communities like Mpasatia. By working together, Ghanaians can reclaim their agricultural heritage and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Long live Atwima! Mponua, Long live Ghana!
